When Mother's Day Feels Difficult

Mother’s Day can be a joyful celebration for many, but for some women it can also be one of the hardest days of the year.
At Betty Bramble, this is something we understand personally, I lost my mum when I was a teenager.  If Mother’s Day feels difficult this year, please know you’re not alone. If you’d prefer not to receive any Mother’s Day marketing from us, you’re very welcome to unsubscribe from these emails (click here to do this).

To support anyone finding the day difficult, therapist Elle Ulliott, founder of Grieving Daughters Club, has shared some gentle ideas that may help.

Before the day:
> Unsubscribe from Mother’s Day emails if they feel overwhelming.
> Take a break from social media if the content feels too much.
> Say no to plans that don’t feel right for you this year.

On the day:
> Do an inheritance audit, write down the traits, habits, or beliefs you inherited from
your mum. What parts of her still live on in you?
> Cook her favourite meal and share stories about her while you eat.
> Write her a letter or voice note and tell her what’s been happening in your life.
> Create a quiet moment to sit and speak to her in your mind.
> Watch her favourite film, or listen to her music.
> Skip the day altogether and treat it like a normal Sunday if that feels easier.
> Reverse Mother’s Day, list everything you’ve survived or learnt since she died.
Honour how far you’ve come.
> Create a “Mum’s Bucket List” of things she might have encouraged you to try (or
challenges she definitely wouldn’t want you to!) and commit to trying a few over the
next year. See how many you can tick off by next year.
> Reach out to someone who understands, a friend, family member, or supportive
community.

However you spend the day, there is no right or wrong way to mark it.  For more support and resources around grief visit Grieving Daughters Club,
@grievingdaughtersclub on Instagram, a space supporting women navigating the loss of a
parent.

At Betty Bramble, we care deeply about the women in our community and hope this provides some gentle support to those who need it.  Lots of love Abi xx
